msplinks.com kills MySpace link SEO karma

MySpace has been redirecting all external links in comments through msplinks.com for a couple of months. Msplinks turns any posted link into a redirect, supposedly in an attempt to cut down on spammer redirects and phishing.

From Tom:

Hey everybody, we just launched another program to stop dirty spammers from hasseling[sic] you. When you input a link in myspace it may be converted to a redirect link.... They still point to their original url, but let us easily turn off links to spam, phishing, or virus sites. booyah!

Until a week or so ago, only links in comments were redirected through msplinks. This fit well with the explanation given in Tom's message. Now external links in profiles are redirected through msplinks as well. The effects of this change are drastic and somewhat sinister.

The average user won't even notice the difference. Clicking a link on MySpace will take them to the destination page unless it happens to be on the MySpace blacklist. Search engines, however, aren't quite as naive. They notice that the link points to msplinks.com. And msplinks chooses how the user and the bots are redirected to the destination page.

A quick check reveals that a recent link to my site is being redirected with a "302 Temporarily Moved" header.

Checked link: http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi...

Type of redirect: 302 Object Moved

Redirected to: http://justinhileman.info

A 302 redirect basically tells Googlebot and friends that "I put one of my pages over on that server temporarily, but you should keep linking to me." This means that msplinks (aka MySpace) keeps the karma for all posted links, rather than passing them on to the destination site. Even if every profile on MySpace linked to my site, it wouldn't affect my PageRank. Not only is MySpace able to filter links and track page visits easier than ever, they can also hijack the Google juice from every link posted by every single MySpace user.

Is this really how it works? It's easy to tell. If MySpace allowed links to credit the target, Google wouldn't index a single page on msplinks.com. But as of the time of this post, a Google search indicates that nearly 3,000 pages have been indexed in msplinks.com.

Google used to give the referring site credit for the contents of the destination page. Luckily they've stopped doing that. But they will still give msplinks credit for the link itself.

For a more detailed explanation of 301 and 302 redirects, and their effect on search engine optimization, read Matt Cutts' 302 redirect discussion.

By rewriting all external links as 302 redirects, MySpace has effectively removed backlinks. Links from MySpace profiles are now worthless for SEO purposes. In their purported efforts to "reduce spam", MySpace has rendered their site worthless for anything but human traffic. This is bad news for all the black hat guys, but it's also terrible news for anyone with honest links from real MySpace users.

Note that content is not being filtered retroactively. Links appear to be sticking around as long as the profile is unchanged. If you have a link on a MySpace profile, this link is now gold. If you're worried about losing the karma these links give you, don't edit your profile.

It might be kinda fun to see the effect this will have on SEO, considering how big MySpace is.

But, it's really lame.

This will also erase the natural SEO that occurs from links posted by legit MySpace users. So any natural popularity will now by of no effect. They threw out the baby with the bathwater. The spammers killed it for everyone.

that's actually what i'm most worried about...

Hey, we should get everyone who externally links to myspace.com to route it through a central server.

Let them taste some of their own medicine.

how the hell could we do that??? i am not big on rerouting my links on myspace, tom did that shit, i just want my stuff to not be tampered with and my links to be referable.

i don't think it's even viable. unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot we can do, other than write an outraged blog post about it and try to inform everyone about what's going on...

for those who have complained... you can digg this post

Tom once announced he liked men, so it doesn't surprise me entirely that he would do something gay.

my problem is that these msplinks.com link encryption doesn't work with case sensitive url's. i don't care so much about seo & google, but we run a radiostation and most of the dj's are on myspace and are linking directly to their shows. how could they set up such a weak scripting for such a big site?

most of myspace's anti-spam measures seem a bit haphazard. it doesn't surprise me that they disregarded a few web standards along the way... and unfortunately, even if they fix the problem, the links will still be cached with the improper capitalization until the profile or post containing them is edited or removed.

so for now, the best news you've got is that at least they'll make it to your domain name, regardless of the capitalization. from there, you control what happens to the link. my advice is either to redirect the lowercaseified links back where they belong (using a 301 redirect, of course), or to enforce a lower case URL standard on your site. a combination of the two might be the best approach.

it looks like MySpace got case sensitivity issues ironed out now...the only part of the URL where it ignores case is the domain, which is actually the expected behavior.

i'm stoked that they got it fixed this fast.

this shi* is dumb every time i try to put a back ground on ma page its there then when i save the changes the back ground is not there becuz msplinks is stoppin it,,how do i get rid of it??

it looks like myspace let my background image through when i tried... so there's hope for ya.

you can try uploading your background image to a different server and see if myspace lets it through. i'd start with imageshack.us or photobucket.com.

keeping the url incl. filename all lowercase solved the problem for me.

I was wondering what msplinks.com was all about. I think your "google juice" is doing OK considering your page came up first on my google search.

Though, I think your article may have been an exercise in futility, because I was pretty dang sure that google had already added myspace.com to its blacklist of sites not to count external links into page ranking. I could be wrong but i heard that, about a year ago, before msplinks.com

Just came across this while doing some research on msplinks.

While it's true that any organic myspace popularity is now erased, there are still ways for blackhatters to get around this new deterrent...

yeah. i've seen a disturbing number of black hat guys getting around this. in fact, a lot of searches that land on this page are trying to find ways to bypass the link filters.

if it's breaking the natural SEO of myspace, and it's not even taking care of the black hat stuff, maybe the issue needs to be readdressed...

I deleted all of the comments on my msplinks entry from the myspace crowd, not sure how half of them even spelled "my" or "space", as can be demonstrated by some of the comments below me.

you mean like freelyme? yeah. i love watching the searches that land people on this page...

1. There are few solutions to the msplinks

2. Don't waste time using ANY links in Bulletins

3. back up all code to text files, before you post to myspace.

4.Make a Myspace Group!!!! And DO not add " " around your http://www.links.com SAVE YOUR CODE BEFORE YOU POST IT
The groups profiles are FREE of MSPLINKS and have been for awhile...check out my group

http://groups.myspace.com/addmyspacefriends

5. I have had ok luck with widgets (they all are still NEW) myspace can block your widget from bulletins...but not your profile, not every widget maker can get past the msplinks, so test it out...

6. use leader links in your profile to connect your group here leave the " " on your links note class="leaderLink"

sample:

<a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=225928354" class="leaderLink" id="leaderLink">
  <img src="http://a524.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/47/l_e5e2fc0ebb4fa3e72070a84ac4317e8b.jpg" border="0">
</a>
<font color="FFFFFF" class="leaderLink">ADD+FRINEDS Group Leader:</font>
<a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=225928354" class="leaderLink" id="leaderLink">Mac</a>

this code is not changed to msplinks when posted in the profile

and if your myspace group can have NORMAL code

and all bulletins links are gone...

the solution is:

make a group, add the join code to your profile

post bulletins using only the TEXT URL of your group

I have over 50k freinds and 17k in my group since 8-05-07

today is Dec 4th 07

I will continue the FIGHT

The following works nicecely for me:
**couldn't insert the code here, check it out at my site:
How to bypass msplinks

Check the results here:

Hope this can be of help! I try all sort of things before this one. This one is easy and IT WORKS!
