IE 6 "Update"

Done21 is taking an interesting stab at the Internet Explorer 6 problem: They're providing and hosting code to simulate an IE yellow notice bar which prompts users to upgrade.

Unfortunately, they're spreading the wrong message. While it's good to upgrade to anything other than IE 6, it's better to upgrade away from IE completely. So here's an improved notice bar which prompts the user to get Firefox instead.

The `update` bar seen in Internet Explorer 6

Feel free to grab the code, remix for your own use. Provide your own message. Spread the word.

Try it out here.

<!--[if IE 6]>
<script type="text/javascript">
    /*Load jQuery if not already loaded*/ if(typeof jQuery == 'undefined'){ document.write("<script type=\"text/javascript\"   src=\"http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3.2/jquery.min.js\"></"+"script>"); var __noconflict = true; }
    var IE6UPDATE_OPTIONS = {
        icons_path: "http://static.ie6update.com/hosted/ie6update/images/",
        url: "http://getfirefox.com",
        message: "Internet Explorer is a bad, bad browser. Click here to upgrade your Internet experience..."
    }
</script>

<![endif]-->

neuter the backspace key, save your email messages, blog posts, and sanity

If you're anything like me, you're prob'ly a bit tired of wiping out an entire web form by hitting backspace at the wrong time. Who decided it's a good idea to make the "delete the last character" key double as a "lose my entire blog post forever and ever" key if I happen to have something besides a text box focused?

Happy day! There's a way to disable this worthless default action (assuming you use a good browser).

Go to about:config—just type that in your address bar—and change this setting:

browser.backspace_action

  • 0 - go back previous page
  • 1 - page up
  • 2 - (does nothing)

Change it to 2 to disable this horrid default, then use the forward and back hotkeys instead...

download firefox 3 on tuesday

we're going to set a world record! download firefox 3 on it's release date to do your part (that's tuesday the 17th, if you haven't been paying attention)

Download Day 2008

i've been using firefox 3 on os x for a while, and i have to say it's amazing. doesn't crash (as often). doesn't have memory leaks. it's way faster. and it feels like a native mac app now. i imagine all you windows users will see similar coolness, but i can't speak from experience there...

Firefox 3, Del.icio.us Bookmarks and consistent interface

One of the reasons I like OS X is the consistent user interface. Apple has well established guidelines that lay out how an application should look and feel, and for the most part developers adhere to this. And those who don't are usually mocked....

So you can imagine how excited I was when the Firefox team announced that they would be releasing operating system targeted themes for Firefox 3. Under Windows XP, it would have XP-like styling, Firefox for Vista takes cues from native Vista apps, and on a Mac, Firefox 3 looks like it belongs:

Screen grabs, Del.icio.us Bookmarks hotness, and custom Mac OS X styles after the jump.

In order to use Firefox, you need to be confident enough to download and use a browser that wasn't the default when you first turned on your computer.

seth godin thinks firefox is a gateway drug. i'd tend to agree.

you guys are a 1337 group of computer users. over half of you don't use IE. congrats.

speeding up firefox

i love firefox. really, i do. it can be speedy. it can be extensible. but apparently it can't be both at the same time... all my development plugins make it slow, and all my browsing plugins make it even slower.

how i fixed my my super slow firefox after the jump.

mac + firefox + justin's blog = wow

firefox for mac has something seriously funky going on with the scroll action on my blog. not sure what's causing it, but i'll look into it when i get a minute. until then, i guess you'll have to use the scroll buttons on the side.

sorry 'bout that :-S

howto: make your fresh Windows XP install usable

my roommate just got a new laptop for his trip to Cambodia, and we were talking about what he needed to do to make windows xp usable. a few quick downloads and he's well on his way.

a few not-so-essential firefox extensions that i can't live without

a while back i posted a couple of my favorite firefox extensions. while everything i said there is certainly still valid, i've got some updates for the list.

today we're going to focus primarily on look and feel. i'm a browser minimalist, so i like to keep my windows clean and light. here are a few extensions that help with that:

starting fresh and firefox extensions...

so i'm setting up a new (and by 'new' i really mean 'old'...) laptop. i like starting from scratch. you have a nice clean slate...

of course, the first thing to install is firefox. because internet explorer is a bad, bad browser...

so now firefox is loaded, and things are ready to go... a few minutes of browsing on the interweb and i discovered the topic of tonight's blog.

several ubercool firefox extensions that i can't live without:
